Testimonials When I was about 12 year old, Scott dragged me to the gym to start working out because he was lifting for his sports. Those summers were tough but they helped lay a great foundation for my future. After a few years, I had really started enjoying training mainly because of how much it was helping me on the ice. As my performance on the ice got better and my dream of playing in the NHL became more of a reality, my training really advanced itself. In the summer of 2000 I had just graduated from high school and finished two years of Junior A hockey for the US National Development Team in Ann Arbor, Mi. I was competing against some of the best players in the world and was now ready to take my off-ice training to a new level. Scott helped me prepare for my freshman year at Ohio State with great success. As an 18 year old freshman my strength and quickness was being displayed on the ice and in the weight room. To this day I still own several records on the OSU hockey weight room wall. The countless hours of hard work and dedication with Scott was beginning to pay off as I was drafted in the 1st round 16th pick of the NHL draft in 2001. I continued to work with Scott in the summers until I signed with the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer of 2004. I had a great rookie season in the American Hockey League during the NHL labor strike with the Philadelphia Phantom, which yielded us the Calder Cup. My success in the AHL and my preparation for training camp the following year landed me a spot on the Flyers roster. My NHL rookie season was very productive and something to build on. After a long rookie season and a few nagging injuries my sophomore season was a step backwards. My off-ice training was dismal compared to my past and my mental preparation was lacking. In addition, our team encountered many injuries and underachieved for the entire season. I knew that I needed to spark the competitive edge that I have always had. I called Scott whom I have always been close with and came up with a game plan for the summer. This resulted in Scott spending the summer at my home in New Jersey preparing me for the upcoming 2008 season. What I was expecting from Scott was for him to simply prepare me for this season. What I got shocked me. I knew that Scott knew his stuff from our success in the past. I was completely impressed how much Scott prepared himself by studying and consulting the best hockey training experts as well as some of the best performance enhancement experts in the world. The program that he designed couldn't have worked any better. I went into training camp stronger and more explosive than ever squatting 650 lbs, bench pressing 350 lbs, box jumping on a 55" box, performing 26 pull ups and having a 38" vertical jump. These stats don't reveal how much better in shape and faster I was not to mention the added confidence. Before we started training, my major concern was spine compression and injury because of heavy lifting. I'm expecting a long and successful career. Scott and I discussed the program design and he assured me that my concerns would be addressed. Turned out he was right. The beautiful part about his training was that I didn't have more than 405 pounds of bar weight on my back all summer. I ended last season at 204 pounds and entered camp ready for a great season at a ripped 212 pounds with an even lower body fat percentage. The two-a-day/ 12 workouts a week really benefited me. The lifting with bands and chains, the sledge dragging, the box jumping, the slide boarding, the dry land training, the mental training, the proper diet, the stretching, and the hockey skills workouts have allowed me to have a break out year and outstanding playoff performance. All of the time I invested came together in the playoffs last year. The hard work paid off when it matter most. I can't wait to lace up the skates this fall with the Blue Jackets. Scott and his training were a key element to my season, playoff performance, and new role with Columbus. We continue to train even more intensely preparing for this upcoming season in which I plan on making the best of my career. If you live in Pittsburgh and you aren't training with Scott, you are missing out. He has seen my rise through the ranks from pee-wee hockey to the NHL and knows what it takes to become a champion. Scott's performance enhancement knowledge has been a key ingredient to my success in hockey and will continue to throughout my career! With Scott, I truly believe that “Limits Don’t Exist”. -RJ Umberger - Columbus Blue Jacket, top 10% NHL in points 2008, 2001 NHL First Round Draft Pick, and Former All American at OSU
Heading into the summer of 2008 following my first full season of Junior A hockey, I believed I knew a great deal about performance and weight training. However, Scott has made me realize what strength training and performance enhancement is really all about. Scott is a true professional when it comes to training a serious athlete who is dedicated to his or her program and committed to personal improvement of the body and mind. There are absolutely no limitations when it comes to training with Scott. I truly believe that he has brought the absolute best out of me, both a physically and mentally. Scott always has a “meaning for his madness”. In this regard, during every training session, I learn new and helpful things to improve myself. Scott is truly a “performance enhancer” in that he not only improves your physical condition but your mental processes as well. He has the unique ability to make his clients stronger in life as well as in the gym. Scott has become a true mentor for me and he will be included in every step I take throughout my career. I would without a doubt recommend Scott to any athlete who has a strong desire to reach the next level. Scott Umberger has made me realize that there is no such thing as reaching my full potential; rather I have realized there is no such thing as reaching full potential because the sky is the limit when it comes to training with him. There are NO LIMITATIONS. -Ryan McGrath- Topica Road Runners in the NAHL
As a devoted hockey player for 15 years and the better part of my life, I thought I knew what strength training was. I was wrong. Scott showed me what strength training is, a combination of explosiveness and the proper weight lifting techniques. Most importantly, he teaches you the finer points of mental toughness -- the ability to never quit, no matter what the consequences, PERIOD. He builds muscle along with character and work ethic, two things that are essential in making it in athletics. I would recommend him to any athlete looking to make the jump to the next level. -Player X- current major Division I Hockey player
After having major shoulder surgery in 2000, I was told that I would only be able to swim recreationally. After several years of rehabilitation, I took the step forward to attempt competitive swimming again. I worked with Scott to get back in to the ripped college shape that I was in prior to surgery. Scott has helped my in may different ways. He has increased my cardiovascular shape, vertical jump, explosion off the starting blocks, and turns off the walls. Since training with Scott I have placed in the top 6 at United States Masters Swimming Nationals and qualified for the FINA Masters World Swimming Championships in Perth Australia. I have also posted 4 national top 10 times. -Joe Price- Former All-American Swimmer at Florida University FINA Master World Championship Qualifying Swimmer As a certified personal trainer, group fitness, yoga, and Pilates instructor, I am very knowledgeable in many facets of fitness. Over the past ten years, I have taught 3-5 yoga, Pilates, and/or group fitness class a week, conducted personal training, taught nationally recognized certifications and workshops, and instructed at colleges and universities. I know fitness...right? Well, so I thought. I have talked about functional training, core stability, and weight loss so much it was like second nature to me. When I starting working with Scott, he opened my eyes to some of the fallacies in the fitness industry which has forced me to change my teaching approach and work out methodology. Changing someone's fitness philosophy is easier said that than done, as any fitness enthusiast knows. He pushed my thinking and challenged my belief systems in core strength, weight training, cardiovascular training, nutrition as it pertains to weight loss, and the mental limitations. Working with Scott I realized the mind is so powerful when training the body. His training made me realize some of the mental limitations I have place on my body impeding my development in training. My belief has always been balance, but I eliminated a key part of my balance by training within self inflicted limitations. I limited my strength training to traditional machines, but very little free weights. Although, I knew the how to use all the free weights I reserved the Squats, Deadlifts, Reverse Hyper, and Benching for athletes or advanced fitness gurus, not me. My thinking was I can get the same results from machines, wow was I wrong. I still practice yoga and Pilates, but the way I strength train and do cardio has completely changed because of my newly acquired knowledge and my mentally fortitude to make it happen. -Pepsi Hutton- MA Yoga Fit, AFAA(CPT, Pilates, Matt I&II, Aqua,), ACE group fitness
I have been trained by Scott since I was 18, I am now 24. Up to this point in my life, I have never met a more well rounded person than Scott. Scott doesn't only train your body, he trains your mind. Since being under his care I have never stopped learning. By no means does it surprise me how well Scott is expanding his business. I can remember when Scott had only 4 people he trained consistently being myself, and RJ Umberger, a wrestler from Lehigh and football player/ javelin thrower who a current Olympic hopeful. I can’t tell you how many times Scott and I worked out at midnight, yes midnight. Why you might ask? In certain situations, that’s the only time that worked for both of us, and that's how much I believed in his knowledge. I can remember doing walking lunges up a driveway covered in two inches of snow. You might question that too. Well, today I am a professional baseball player and that should answer all of your questions up until this point. My success has a lot to do with Scott. He believed in me when no one else did. He pushed me when no one else cared to do so. He is there for me when I worry about stuff that I shouldn't. No matter when or what time I call him, he gives me a sense of relief when the conversation has ended. Since I am in California right now I speak with Scott over the phone everyday, and am still under his close tutelage. The workouts that Scott prescribes are something that you most likely have never done before. I can assure you that the workouts will give you faster gains in strength, speed, and power much faster than any other workout out there. You will do things that are different and other people might question the validity. It doesn't matter what other people think, just believe in what you are doing. IT WORKS. I would only hope that you can be smart enough to take advantage of the opportunity Scott can offer you. After all, two of the first four athletes he trained went pro, 2 were all Americans, one had a great collegiate wrestling caree(one of 3 wrestlers in Lehigh history to have over 25 career wins) and one is vying for a spot in the upcoming Olympics after a record breaking collegiate career at Pitt. Think about that. -Chris Kobielus-
I've be runner since early childhood which led to be running track from high school through college. With hard work and drive, I had produced results that made me feel accomplished. My senior year of high school I qualified for states in 4 events. Throughout my first three years of college I had medaled in all of the events I ran. It was during my senior year of track at Robert Morris that I started to seriously weight train with Scott. Up to that point in my career, I was working hard and lifting light. Scott introduced me to more of an athletic lifting routine center around strength. At the time, I was in a state of denial thinking that lifting heavy would be more of a detriment than a booster for my track times. I qualified for the IC4A’s in my past 3 years of college. My senior season was a little different. This year I was actually going to come on with some IC4A medals around my neck from both the 110m High hurdles and the 400m Hurdles. I set personal records in the 400m hurdles by well over 1 second and the 110m hurdles by nearly ½ second. In short distance races, a fraction of seconds is a lifetime. I was skeptical of weight training prior to working out with Scott, but am happy to be able to look back and be thankful that I did. Scott turned me into a believer by turning this scrappy kid from Baldwin High School into a medal winner at the IC4A’s championships (pre NCAA championship meet). I only wish that I would have started training with Scott sooner.” -James Baughman- Former Division I track standout and current record holder and Hall of Fame member at Robert Morris University
